  • A Personal Vision: Why We Support Eye Surgeons International – by Cara Davies

At V. Sattui, we often talk about vision—the vision to craft world-class wines and the vision to preserve the beauty of Napa Valley. But today, I want to share a story about a different kind of vision: the literal gift of sight.

Many of you know me as Tom’s better half (and yes, I’ll happily claim that title), but what you may not know is how deeply personal this mission is to me.

My cousin, Dr. John Bosetti, and his wife, Dr. Nancy Jameson, are the founders of Eye Surgeons International (ESI). Dr. John is also the reason I can see the vineyards today.

Several years ago, I faced the possibility of losing my vision due to torn retinas in both eyes. It required complex laser surgeries, procedures that depend not only on incredible skill, but also access to advanced technology. Thanks to Dr. John’s steady hand and that level of care, my sight was saved.

That experience changed everything for me.

It’s why Tom and I are so passionate about supporting Eye Surgeons International and helping bring this same life-changing care to people who would otherwise go without it.

    Restoring Sight, Restoring Lives

Eye Surgeons International is a nonprofit dedicated to curing preventable blindness in underserved regions of the world. But their work goes far beyond performing surgeries.

ESI is currently building a state-of-the-art ophthalmic medical campus in Zimba, Zambia.  This center acts as a “teaching hub” designed to train local surgeons and nurses. This model creates sustainable, long-term care that empowers communities and breaks cycles of poverty.

Because in many of the regions ESI serves, blindness is more than a medical condition—it’s a life-altering hardship.

Without sight, a grandfather cannot work. A mother cannot care for her children. A child may have to leave school to guide a blind family member. Vision loss can mean losing not only independence, but also one’s role within the family and community.

By restoring sight, ESI restores dignity, purpose, and possibility. Patients regain their independence. They return to work. They care for their families. They rejoin their communities as active, contributing members.

As Dr. John Bosetti so powerfully puts it:

“When we restore a person’s sight, we give them back their life. We restore their ability to provide, their sense of purpose, and the dignity of standing on their own two feet.”
