ST. HELENA, Calif. – March 5, 2026 – After more than two decades of distinguished leadership and award-winning production as Director of Winemaking and Vineyard Operations, Brooks Painter is transitioning to the esteemed role of Winemaker Emeritus and Consultant for V. Sattui Winery and Castello di Amorosa.
Throughout his 20-plus year tenure, Painter has been instrumental in shaping the portfolios and cementing the reputations of both historic Napa Valley properties. In his new capacity as Winemaker Emeritus, he will step back from day-to-day production to focus on high-level strategic guidance, safeguarding the stylistic legacy of both wineries.
A cornerstone of Painter’s new role will be direct succession planning and mentorship. He will work closely alongside the next generation of the estates’ winemaking leadership, including winemakers Peter Velleno, Jason Moravec, and newly promoted to winemaker, Audrie Walsh, to ensure a seamless transfer of knowledge and the continued excellence of the cellar teams.
Additionally, Painter will provide critical oversight and consultation for a comprehensive, multi-year viticultural transition of over 360 planted vine acres spanning four counties. Collaborating with 30-year winery veteran and Vineyard Manager David Bejar, Viticulturist Carter Mochizuki, and agricultural expert Martin Mochizuki, he will help guide the estates’ vineyard management and commitment to organic farming along with sourcing strategies into the future, ensuring the highest quality fruit for generations to come.
“Brooks has been the defining voice of our winemaking for over two decades,” said Tom Davies, President of V. Sattui Winery. “His dedication to quality and his innovative spirit have shaped who we are today. Brooks was a game changer when he joined us over 20 years ago, and he deserves much of the credit for our success in the last two decades. Having him step into this Winemaker Emeritus role is invaluable; it ensures that his philosophy, standard of excellence, and historical knowledge will continue to guide our viticulture and winemaking teams for years to come.”
Painter’s transition reflects a celebrated tradition within the Napa Valley, allowing legendary winemakers to impart their technical mastery to rising talent while continuing to advocate for the region’s renowned wine industry.
