Located in northern Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley is long and narrow with steep sides. It lies between the cool, coastal Russian River Valley and the hotter Alexander Valley inland. The climate and soil are peculiarly suited to this variety, making it a climatic “sweet spot” for growing Zinfandel, which, like Goldilocks, prefers it “not too hot and not too cold.”
It’s a rich and lively wine, a warm, jammy basket of currants, cranberries and persimmon. Like so many Dry Creek Zins, the presence of ground pepper, cinnamon and other spices is a recurrent theme, so much so that the spicy character of Dry Creek Zinfandel has become a textbook descriptor of the variety.
