Vittorio’s Vineyard, about thirty acres adjacent to the winery on the south side, is planted about half to Cabernet Sauvignon. The soils are gravelly loam and marginally fertile, which stresses the vines and produces excellent quality grapes. The vineyard enjoys a microclimate that is perfectly suited to Cabernet and the four other varieties (Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah & Zinfandel) planted there.
98% of the Cabernet comes from our Vittorio’s Vineyard, adjacent to the Winery in St. Helena and CCOF-certified. We have six Cabernet blocks, about two acres each, with different clones, including Clone 6 (also known as the Jackson clone, which produces small berries, loose clusters and very concentrated fruit.) 2% of the Cabernet is from Gerlach Vineyards in Coombsville, Napa Valley’s newest appellation, where its cooler microclimate adds color and complexity. 4% Petite Verdot, also from Vittorio’s Vineyard, gives additional color and weight to the blend. The wine was aged in 80% new French oak for 18 months.
