Watch this video tutorial on how to open a bottle of Madeira

Our Madeira is a rich, smooth and nutty after-dinner wine that belies the complex method of preparation that goes into making it. Its blend of ancient port, rich Zinfandel and fine brandy gives it a sweet hazelnut, burnt-caramel flavor that is both intriguing and haunting. Many people who favor great ports and sherries know us solely for this single wine. The solera process is an ingenious system of fractional blending perfected by the Spanish to ensure consistent quality, based on the fact that old wines can be refreshed by the addition of a younger wine, which then acquires the characteristics of the old wine.

We begin with now what is now a 107-year-old vintage port, a lasting vestige from Vittorio Sattui’s original winery, as the “mother,” or master-blend. We then fashion primary, secondary and tertiary blends (criaderas), using varying ages of Zinfandel—the oldest is more than 35 years old—and add a little back to the mother to keep it alive, much like sourdough breadmaking.

STORING MADEIRA:  Although our Madeira will age, often up to several years in perfect cellar conditions, we recommend it be consumed within 1-3 years after opening. Store it upright in your cupboard like you would a spirit.

My wife is the wine connoiseur in the family. We have had delicious wines all over the world and have tasted many of the wines of Napa, Sonoma & the Russian River and this is her favorite of all wines. I have bought cases of V. Sattui Madeira for her over the years.

I would walk cross country for a bottle of this wine. I have found nothing like it in any other Madeira and I've searched. Sweet, the aftertaste is a treat. Well worth the shipping costs.

Spent two days in Napa and Sonoma. Napa was not my favorite but I could not get this off my mind. I have searched high and low for something similar and this has set the bar high.

We've been going to V. Sattui since we moved to Northern California 21 years ago. Can't remember when we hit upon the Madeira but it has been a favorite ever since.

Take everything that V. Sattui produces off the shelf except for the Madeira and I think they'd still make a go of it with this product. It's that good!

It's almost time to make another trip!

I first bought the Madeira at the Sattui Winery in 1980. It was 30 years old back then and it was and still is my favorite. Nobody comes close to this wine. I bought a case of it for a VP from Connecticut and he thought it was amazing. Needless to say I had a very good career.

We tried this at the winery in 2008. We loved it immediately! We had been saving it for a special occasion and finally opened it at New Years! It was even better than we remembered! It was exquisite! It is sweet but not overly sweet! It is so smooth and easy to drink! Everyone we let try some, loved it!! We will definately be buying more and trying more of the dessert wines from V. Sattui!

I was at a 50th birthday party for a friend when he pulled out the Madeira bottle (probably 20+ years old) for the special occasion. The taste was nothing short of incredible, I was instantly hooked! He understandably won't part with his last bottle, so I will be ordering my own.

I'm from Los Angeles and I was visiting Oakland, California for a Raider game this past weekend. We were driving around all over Norther Cali and the Bay Area and we decided to hit Napa to check out a winery or two. We ended up driving further North in Napa County to this winery after seeing a nice pamphlet for it. I'm not really even a wine type of person, I'm more of a cogniac lover. But after tasting a couple of the white wines on the menu, there were two wines that I instantly got hooked on: California Madeira and another wine named "Angelica" (if my memory is working properly). They caught my attention when i noticed that they smelled like cogniac, but when you take a drink it tastes so perfectly smooth, especially when you let it touch your different taste buds. And the aftertaste is something else. It was a sweet, kind of fruity aftertaste that goes down sooo smooth. I decided to buy a bottle for my sisters, but now I'm regretting not buying myself one for a special occasion.

This s the besy wine! We visited the winery in August 2012 with a group of Food Distributers and tasted several of the wines they presented. The Madeira was absolutely divine! We ordered 6 bottles and had them shipped home. It has been a huge hit at the wine tasting parties we have attended. Everyone has asked where they can get this wine. We have putin an order for more! This wine is my all time favorite!

A description of this wine does not do it justice, you really need to taste, and aftertaste it to believe just how amazing it is. Nevertheless, here is my impression: Mild brandy and a hint of citrus on the nose, first taste is sweet wine evolving into a warm brandy and light citrus with a medium-heavy body diminishing into a light almond caramel flavor followed by an intense explosion of toffee and almonds in the aftertaste which lingers for several minutes. Amazing.

I first tried this wine in 1979 when I was stationed at Alameda Naval Base. It was great then, I still have that empty bottle. Bought my second bottle in 2008 before I opened the bottle I could smell the aroma and taste it's flavor. When I actually drank it it was like 1979 all over again.

This is the best wine ever. I've been trying to find a wine that my wife would like for years with poor results until we visited V Sattui. Of course it would have to be Madeira which we both fell in love with. She sent me a message yesterday telling me to order some more. She didn't know we already had one stashed! Just in time for valentines day! Love it!

From the depth of depression, I reached into the cabinet and discovered I had long been hiding a bootle of Sattui Maderia! It was opened and I feared ruined, but upon smelling the aroma, i knew that the magic still lingered within. Sure enough, even after at least 13 years, it is without a doubt the best elixir ever concocted. I shall order soon and never be without my favorite drink. I don't consider it a "desert" but a treat meant to pronounce a final touch of peace upon a celebration or a bittersweet day. Thank you for all the work that goes into each bottle!

I don't remember how long we've had this bottle #35804, could be 10-14 years. I opened it 04-14-14, and expected it to be vinegar. This is the best wine/now liqueur that I have ever had; definitely a collector's wine.
