From our Carneros property, intense and concentrated with dusty berry, chocolate and plum flavors that are rich and complex, this wine is supple and round with a lasting finish.
This wine comes from our Henry Ranch (94% Merlot) with a splash of our Preston Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) added for complexity and a drop of Sierra Foothill Malbec (1%) for depth. Aged in 100% new oak selected with tighter grains from northern forests of France such as Allier and Trancois.
This blockbuster Rutherford bench Cabernet has a dense core of blackberry, olive and black licorice on the palate with ample tannins, good acidity and a lingering fruit finish.
The wine has a clear fix on varietal character, with distinctive blueberry, tobacco and black olive flavors that are ripe and complex. There are intriguing hints of violets, cocoa and spice, a slight minty edge and fine overall balance.
2004 was a textbook year for California Wine and we picked our flagship, Rutherford Bench Morisoli and Preston Vineyards block – by – block to produce wines of concentrated red-ripe flavors. With the crop in, we knew that we had the makings of some very special wines, so any barrel showing exceptional qualities were set aside. We ended up with 9 barrels – 69% from Preston Vineyard and 31% from Morisoli - chosen from a total of 396. These barrels of 100% French oak from the forests of Transois and Allier ranged from new to 1 and 2 years old.
We aged these wines for 18.5 months and they yielded a scant 200 cases. Additionally, we aged this wine in the bottle for 2 more years before its release.
Eighty year old vines are the genesis for this very expressive single-vineyard bottling that has quickly become one of our most sought-after Zinfandel's.
There’s an elegance about this wine not found in many Zinfandels, which are often briary and tend to be very fruit forward. This one has great balance and is already very easy to drink.
One hundred percent Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, meter-by-meter spaced, are used in this full-bodied super-Tuscan, aged in French oak and exhibiting robust flavors and a long, lingering finish.
