Carneros has been called the Burgundy of California because the two Burgundian grape varieties—Chardonnay and Pinot Noir—achieve exquisite flavors in this region.
Carsi Vineyard lies about thirteen miles south of the winery, in a wide, flat basin just north of the town of Napa. It’s a cooler zone of heavier soils where Chardonnay does exceptionally well. V. Sattui purchased the land in 1989 and invested heavily in soil amendments, fertilization and trellising of the existing vines before naming it after my great-grandfather Vittorio’s Italian village in the mountains above Genoa. We began to produce some excellent Chardonnays in just a short time.
We use the same seductive Muscat of Alexandria grape as for the sweet Muscat; we just make it in a crisper, drier style. This is accomplished by picking a little earlier, when the acids are a little higher, and fermenting it a little longer, so as to reduce the residual sugar in the finished wine. It has an intense, floral aroma, and its pale-clear color belies its abundant flavors, rich with honeysuckle, green apple and ripe peach.
Lovers of suave, rich, mouth-filling Chardonnays will find great appeal in this Reserve Stock bottling, a blend of the best fruit from our premium Chardonnay sources—Carsi Vineyard and Henry Ranch.
